EDITOR'S NOTE: As the new Editor of the FUN Newsletter, I am planning several innovations to both the look and content of the newsletter. But I will need your help. What do YOU want to see in the Newsletter? What information would you consider valuable? What might be included that is just ” fun”! Would YOU like to write a piece on something? One new feature will be a recurring column that spotlights various undergraduate neuroscience programs. Amherst College will be the first, appearing in the Fall issue. If you want to promote YOUR program, drop me an email. And pictures! OK, enough. Please send your ideas to me at clelancl@jmu.edu. T hanks, Corey Cleland TOP OF PAGE |

J U N E -- J ournal of U ndergraduate NE uroscience -- Inaugural Issue coming to you SOON! CALL FOR PAPERS: Educators are invited to submit papers and reviews to JUNE. JUNE is a new, FUN-sponsored electronic journal for undergraduate neuroscience faculty that will publish peer-reviewed reports of innovations in any area of undergraduate neuroscience education related to the mission of advancing undergraduate neuroscience. Emphasis will be placed on communicating effective laboratory exercises. In addition to publishing peer-reviewed articles, JUNE will also serve as a means for faculty to exchange information regarding funding opportunities, laboratory techniques, innovative media, curricula, and teaching methods. Letters to the editor, as well as book, curricular, equipment, and media reviews will also be published. JUNE is not an appropriate vehicle to publish topics related to pre-college neuroscience education or the results of undergraduate research.Manuscripts and reviews should be submitted to the editor by August 12th, 2002 for consideration in the inaugural Fall 2002 issue. Suggestions for topics readers would like JUNE to address are also encouraged.
Detailed instructions for authors will be available shortly at:

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - EDUCATOR AWARDS The Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience has established both an "Educator of the Year" award and a "Lifetime/Career Achievement" award, and seeks nominations for these awards. The "Educator of the Year" award, which will be awarded annually, recognizes the accomplishment of a goal that REALLY reflects the mission of FUN -- having aided the promotion of neuroscience education and research at the undergraduate level. The "Lifetime/Career Achievement" award, awarded when warranted by nomination and vote, recognizes a long pattern of effort (Lifetime; perhaps 10+ years) OR A SINGULAR contribution (Career achievement) that substantively aids the neuroscience community, in a way (or ways) that reflects the mission of FUN -- promoting neuroscience education and research at the undergraduate level . DETAILS: 1) Who is eligible for the award? E ducator Award: F UN members only. L ifetime or Career Achievement Award: Anyone, whether member or not. 2) Who can nominate? Only dues-paying FUN members may nominate; no self nominations allowed. 3) What does a nomination consist of? Nominations are in the form of a letter, with specific content that addresses the award criteria (implicit in the award category description). For either category, how does this nominee "live up" to such a criterion for selection, OR how does what the nominee DID satisfy this criterion ? 4) Who selects the Awardee (s)? The Faculty Awards Committee will be chaired by the Past-President of FUN and consist of the following members: FUN President, 2 FUN councilors and one member from outside the FUN executive committee who is recruited by the chair . 5) Where will the awards be presented? The award(s) is/are presented at the FUN Social at the annual SFN meeting, as are the travel awards. The award consists of a lovely plaque in either case (i.e , the lifetime/career award, or the educator of the year). The president of FUN sends letters to the awardee's department and institution. The award is announced in the FUN and SFN newsletters, similar to the travel awards. 6) Deadline for postmarking / e-mailing nominations is September 1 of each year. Send nominations electronically to: kparfitt@pomona.edu OR to:
Karen Parfitt
Additional questions can be directed towards Karen Parfitt <kparfitt@pomona.edu> or Eric Wiertelak <wiertelak@macalester.edu>
WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR NOMINATIONS ! ! !

SFN MEETING - CALL FOR POSTERS This is to remind you that the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience will be holding its annual poster session on Monday, November 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in conjunction with our Special Interest Social. As has been the tradition, posters with undergraduate co-authors that have been presented at the Society's meeting can be "re-presented" at the social. This permits undergraduate students who have worked on these projects to assume center stage in the role of a conference presenter. In addition, FUN invites undergraduates to present posters that for a variety of reasons (e.g., work was done during these summer months, abstract deadline for the regular meeting is too early, it's difficult to submit more than one paper from a laboratory, etc.) are not being presented at the primary sessions. Posters submitted in this category will be accepted on a space-available basis and be evaluated on scientific merit prior to acceptance for presentation. For those of you who have not participated in this event in the past, the social is an excellent opportunity for undergraduates to meet peers, faculty , and to make contacts that might prove valuable for graduate school. We encourage representatives from graduate programs to attend this event and get to meet some of the participating undergraduates. SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: For posters that have been presented at the conference, please submit a copy of the abstract that appears in the SFN abstracts with the name(s) of the undergraduate presenters UNDERLINED. For posters that ONLY will be presented at the social, please submit an abstract prepared in the format used for SFN abstracts, with the name(s) of the undergraduate presenters UNDERLINED. In addition, please send a letter of endorsement from a sponsor who needs to be a member of the Society for Neuroscience. This person can sponsor more than one undergraduate poster. If such person is not presently a member of FUN they can expect an application for membership in the return mail!! Please send the abstract and letter of endorsement as Word attachments to kparfitt@pomona.edu , OR hard copies to:
