Animals in Research Panel
Sunday, November 3
5:30 - 6:45 pm
Orange County Convention Center, Room 208C
Organized by the SFN Committee on Animals in Research
The End of Animal Research: More Fact Than Fiction?
Throughout the years of medical discovery and advancement, numerous animal models have played an integral role in advancing scientific progress. Animal research has resulted in tremendous life-saving and life-extending treatments. Yet what would happen if the costs of, and restrictions on, performing such research were so great that neuroscientists and other researchers would be forced to halt this research?
An era without animal research is closer to fact than fiction. Those who oppose the use of animal models for basic and clinical research have been conducting a relentless campaign to impede and, ultimately, end animal research through legislative, regulatory and legal tactics. The results of these efforts are already definitively affecting the conduct of animal research—the question is, where it will all lead? How much is too much? At what point is human and animal health irretrievably compromised? Join us for a riveting panel discussion on this important topic. Panelists will include members of the legal, legislative, and medical communities to address the depth and scope of the problem.
Moderator: D.G. Amaral, Center for Neuroscience, University of California at Davis, and Chairperson, SFN Committee on Animals in Research. For Further Information: A. Wainick, Society for Neuroscience, 11 Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC, 20036. Phone: 202-462-6688. E-mail: allisonw@sfn.org

The Association of Neuroscience Departments and Programs invites students, postdoctoral researchers, and more senior neuroscientists to participate in a discussion of "Getting the Most out of Your Postdoc." Formal presentations concerning the postdoctoral training experience and what search committees look for when hiring faculty/scientists will be followed by a panel discussion by graduate students and postdocs. Audience participation will be encouraged to stimulate a lively discussion of issues.
